summer riot

hollywood makes its greatest impact every year via its parade of summer blockbusters that never fail to fill movie theatres across the globe. so what's in store for this year?

EVERY YEAR, FROM ROUGHLY MAY to July, cinemagoers around the world are treated to a huge sprinkle of Hollywood magic. The films that are released around this time have the highest potential to gain mega audiences and most of them are big-budget affairs produced by the top studios. A few years back, you may remember that no fewer than two Batman films were released at the height of the summer blockbuster season, and indeed many Marvel superhero flicks have also been fired up during this high season, primarily in order to coincide with the school holidays. Much of the stuff released around this time has little Oscar potential, it has to be said. What it has, though, is the power to attract multitudes of viewers and hopefully become Hollywood money spinners par excellence. So, without further ado, it's time to round up five of the films that should be packing theatres this summer.

The Lone Ranger
Director: Gore Verbinski
Cast: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson

The hype surrounding this one is just huge and got even bigger when the cinema-loving public was let in on the fact that one of the best-loved actors ever, Johnny Depp, would be tackling the role of Tonto. Couple this with a story that revolves around one of America's best-known fictional Wild West heroes and we're surely onto a winner here. Gore Verbinski is helming this project and was given the difficult task of completing this one without disappointing either the character's true fans or the studio. There was a slight tinge of disappointment when we found out that Disney and Bruckheimer Pictures would be producing "The Lone Ranger". "Pirates of the Caribbean" mark two, anyone? Well, we'll just have to make our way to the cinema and see this one for ourselves before we pass judgement, although we've a suspicion that "The Lone Ranger" will fill our doubts full of lead.

hicker than water

Tony Birch's excellent novel excels at utilising the damage and violence that infects the vast australian underclass of its setting

IF BLOOD IS THICKER than water, it's not always evident in Tony Birch's novel of a family on the edge. "Blood" follows the tumultuous lives of 13-year-old narrator Jesse and his younger sister Rachel as they are dragged from city to city, and bad to worse, by their mother Gwen, a self-destructive drifter, and occasional prostitute, with awful taste in men. Periods of stability for the children, who are mostly left to fend for themselves, are few and agonisingly short-lived. First it is responsible and resourceful Jon, fresh out of gaol, who takes them under his wing and briefly turns their derelict peri-urban shack into a haven. Later, Gwen's estranged, reformed-alcoholic father, Pop, taciturn and racked with guilt about his part in his daughter's downward spiral, provides them with a joyful few weeks of calmness and order in his suburban home. But they are never allowed to settle for long and when Gwen reappears after an unexplained absence, they are whisked away again and thrown back into jeopardy.

Back on the road, foreboding looms at every turn. These portents are sometimes foretold by tarot cards pulled from their mother's deck. Throughout the novel the tarot's unsettling designs are eerily repeated in the people, desolate towns and landscape they pass through in their flight from Gwen's psychopathic lover Ray Crow, a drug dealer driving a battered Camaro caked in bull-dust, who wants his money back.

Ray's pursuit of the children brings to mind the terrifying Reverend Harry Powell LOVE tattooed across his right knuckles, HATE across the left who menaces brother and sister Ben and Pearl in Charles Laughton's haunting 1955 film "Night of the Hunter" (based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Davis Grubb), and Birch makes more explicit reference to Jem and Scout from another classic of the genre, "To Kill a Mockingbird"; "Blood" shares both the shimmering gothic quality of these as well as their celebration of the bonds that help the children rise above and survive the desperate situations they are forced to endure at the hands of predatory adults...

standing up for culture's sake

one dedicated organisation is aiming to preserve one of  indonesia's most unique cultures

Of the many unique cultures and traditions in Indonesia, peranakan tionghoa (literally, chinese descendents) is perhaps one of the most distinctive. This culture has roots that stretch all the way back to mainland china, as chinese immigrants landed on the shores of Indonesia centuries ago, settled down and made their way across the country. There has always been a misconception with regards to this culture though, a negative stigma towards those of peranakan tionghoa heritage which was especially strong during the new order regime of former president soeharto. Moreover, so many simply haven't a clue about their own culture and only recognise themselves as chinese Indonesians.

With these issues in mind, one group of like-minded individuals decided to try to do its bit to rectify this sad situation. This led to the formation of the association of peranakan tionghoa Indonesia, or ASPERTINA. To learn a little more about ASPERTINA, we spoke to its head, andrew susanto.
